MIBs and SIBs

Master Information Blocks (MIBs) and System Information Blocks (SIBs) are essential components of the Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) network. These blocks of information contain crucial data that is used to establish a reliable and efficient communication link between IoT devices and the network.

Master Information Blocks (MIBs)

MIBs contain the most critical and frequently communicated system information. They are broadcasted periodically by the network to ensure that all IoT devices have access to the latest information. MIBs provide fundamental data such as:

  • Cell ID

  • System bandwidth

  • System frame number

  • Subcarrier spacing

The MIBs are critical for the initial connection establishment of an IoT device to the NB-IoT network. The devices use the information contained in the MIB to find and synchronize with the network.

System Information Blocks (SIBs)

SIBs are other information blocks in the NB-IoT network other than the MIB. They contain additional system information that is necessary for IoT devices to communicate with the network efficiently. Some of the data contained in SIBs include:

  • Neighbor cell information

  • Handover parameters

  • Radio resource configuration

  • Service access point information

  • Network access control information

SIBs are broadcasted periodically by the network, similar to MIBs, to ensure that all IoT devices have access to the latest information. The devices use the information contained in SIBs to make decisions on data transmission, mobility management, and resource allocation.
